Is tonight a northern lights night?

Two things decide it: solar activity (the Kp index) and whether you can see the sky. We combine both into one number so you can decide whether to go out, join a chase, or stay in.

Guides drive to where the sky is clear — on a marginal night that's often the difference. Small-group chases from Tromsø run September to early April.

How to read the number

Above 70: go out. Above 45: worth trying after 22:00, especially away from town lights. Below 25: the sky is either cloudy or quiet; consider a guided chase that can drive to clearer weather, or plan for another night. The score is zero during midnight sun (roughly late May to late July) because the sky never gets dark.

Kp comes from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. Cloud cover and darkness come from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (the same data as yr.no). The score updates every 15 minutes.
