Calculated from latitude for the 15th of each month. This is the thing most first-time visitors get wrong: in December, Tromsø has no sunrise at all, and even Oslo manages under six hours.

The two things only the north has

Northern lights: late September to late March

You need darkness and a clear sky. Darkness is guaranteed from late September; clear skies are not, which is why we built a nightly forecast. Statistically the equinox months (September–October and February–March) are the most geomagnetically active, and February–March adds enough daylight to do something with your afternoons.

Midnight sun: late May to late July

Tromsø 20 May–22 July, Lofoten 26 May–17 July, Bodø 2 June–10 July, North Cape 14 May–29 July. South of the Arctic Circle it never quite happens, but Trondheim and even Oslo have usable light past 23:00 in June.

Month by month, honestly

January — polar night in the north, aurora at its darkest, cold everywhere; the coastal ship and Tromsø are in full winter season. February — light returns fast; best aurora-plus-daytime month; skiing. March — still aurora, more sun, spring skiing; a favourite. April — awkward: too light for aurora after mid-month, too much snow for hiking, but cheap and empty. May — blossom in Hardanger, waterfalls at full force from snowmelt, 17 May everywhere; fjord season opens. June — longest days, hiking opens on lower trails, midnight sun; crowds start. July — warmest, busiest, most expensive; every trail open. August — still summer, slightly quieter after mid-month, first dark nights in the north at the very end. September — the best all-round month: hiking, colour, aurora returning, prices falling. October — aurora good, weather wet, many summer operators closed. November — dark, wet, whale watching starts off Tromsø; cheapest. December — polar night, Christmas markets, aurora, and the shortest days of the year in the south.
